Doppelmayr: Globi Coelestis in Tabulas Planas Redacti Pars I-VI. 1742. Nuremberg. Published by the Homann Heirs. 23 x 19¼" (as issued). From Doppelmayr's Atlas Coelestis…. Six charts.
All of the images are crisp and clear with original wash color. Pars I-V are very good to fine: {ars VI has some minimal staining and the image is not quite as crisp, but is in generally good to very good condition. All plates have a light pencil ID recto at the bottom right margin.
Doppelmayr's Atlas Coelestis… contained 30 plates: ten are star maps in three categories -- ecliptic polar (two), equatorial polar (two) and gnomonic (the six plates offered here). These gnomonic charts show the constellations (as charted in 1730) in different parts of the sky. The stars are labelled with roman numerals, which are then identified in the columns on the sides. Following the lead of Pardies, Doppelmayr has included the paths of various comets.
Often bits and pieces of this wonderful and excellent group are available, but to find a complete set is rare. One likes to imagine that these charts have been together since 1742.
Pars I illustrates 21 constellations of the North Equatorial Pole.
Pars II illustrates 18 constellations of the Vernal Equinox.
Pars III illustrates 17 constellations of the Summer Solstice.
Pars IV illustrates 16 constellations of the Autumnal Equinox.
Pars V illustrates 23 constellations of the Winter Solstice.
Pars VI illustrates 21 constellations of the South Equatorial Pole.
